Growing up, math and science came easily to Dr. Callahan. Couple that with his passion for getting to know and care for people, and medicine was a natural fit. “I enjoy sitting and talking with patients, taking my time getting to know them. They need time to express how they’re feeling and how it’s affecting their life. That’s why I’m there, to listen and solve their problem.”
Dr. Callahan started his education at the University of Iowa, where he received a B.S. in General Science, with honors. After earning his Medical Doctorate from St. Louis University School of Medicine in 1987, he entered a transitional internship and residency in orthopedic surgery at Fitzsimons Army Medical Center in Aurora, Colorado. During that time, he also served in the U.S. Army Medical Corps, and continued doing so through 1996, when he joined Excel Orthopedics.
“I love my job. The patients are motivated; they want to get better and they have conditions that will get better. And I get to take care of a variety of ages; I like that aspect of it.”
Dr. Callahan says he enjoys working with such a tenacious group of healthcare providers. “We’re very enthusiastic about taking care of our patients. Each individual wants to do the best they can at their role, making the whole patient experience positive. It’s great to work here.”
Dr. Callahan brings plenty of accolades to the practice. He was certified by the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery in July 1996, recertified in 2006, and is a fellow of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons. He is a member of the Christian Medical Association, the American College of Sports Medicine and is a preceptor in the Department of Family Medicine at the University Of Wisconsin School Of Medicine.
Dr. Callahan is also quite the sports photographer, spending his free time photographing his children’s sporting events. “I think when I retire I’d like to be one of those guys on the sidelines with a gigantic photo lens,” he laughs. He also enjoys seeing new places, spending time with his wife and kids and staying active in church.
